2009 National Carcinoid/NET Patient Conference

Overview of the Event

On 24-25 September the Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Network (CCAN) in association with Ochsner Medical Center, Kenner held the 2009 National Carcinoid / NET Patient Conference at the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel in New Orleans Louisiana USA. The 2-day event was attended by some 500 patients, family caregivers and physicians. The major goal of the conference was to give patients the information they need to make informed choices regarding their medical care and to acquaint them with internationally recognized neuroendocrine experts. As patients and the medical community become more knowledgeable about neuroendocrine cancer, quicker diagnoses and more effective treatment will occur. The program provided updates on diagnosis and treatment in several areas: Establishing the Basics: What You Really Need to Know Biomarkers/Pathology for Carcinoid & Islet Cell Tumors What's New in NETs Islet Cell & Men I/II Novel Treatments for NETs Nuclear Medicine, PRRT and other Radiotherapies In addition, various cocktails, an exhibition for support groups, and a silent auction were held on the sidelines. CCAN organized a half-day workshop for PAGs which serve communities around the world. The conference was dedicated to the memory of Monica Warner, who passed away unexpectedly. She was the driving force for the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation. She will be greatly missed. Monica is seen here in a painting delivered to her husband Richard Warner by event host Eugene Woltering.
