2009 National Carcinoid/NET Patient Conference
Overview of the Event


On 24-25 September the Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Network (CCAN) in association with Ochsner Medical Center, Kenner held the 2009 National Carcinoid / NET Patient Conference at the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel in New Orleans Louisiana USA. The 2-day event was attended by some 500 patients, family caregivers and physicians.

The major goal of the conference was to give patients the information they need to make informed choices regarding their medical care and to acquaint them with internationally recognized neuroendocrine experts. audience is engrossed in a panel session at the end of the first day, led by Yi-Zarn Wang (click to enlarge)As patients and the medical community become more knowledgeable about neuroendocrine cancer, quicker diagnoses and more effective treatment will occur.

The program provided updates on diagnosis and treatment in several areas:

  1. Establishing the Basics: What You Really Need to Know
  2. Biomarkers/Pathology for Carcinoid & Islet Cell Tumors
  3. What's New in NETs
  4. Islet Cell & Men I/II
  5. Novel Treatments for NETs
  6. Nuclear Medicine, PRRT and other Radiotherapies

In addition, various cocktails, an exhibition for support groups, and a silent auction were held on the sidelines. CCAN organized a half-day workshop for PAGs which serve communities around the world.

Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Network (CCAN) is a nonprofit organization incorporated in 2004 to promote awareness of carcinoid cancer and other neuroendocrine tumors. The organization assists support groups around the world in providing patients and caregivers access to timely and relevant information regarding this disease.

Over the years CCAN has produced 17 patient conferences, many of which were recorded for online viewing and are available also as CDs and DVDs. A toll-free support line (+1-866-850-9555) is answered daily, 9am - 9pm EST by a patient and caregiver. Call for a free information packet.
